Pity that the talk was not streamed to the South Island branch, but this summary gave some insight.
The question I have is: what about a suitable-sized nuclear power station to replace the Huntly facility, and at the same site?
pro: 1. the site is already used for generation and has the infrastructure to distribute electricity, probably mainly to Auckland.
    2. Also the current station needs river water to cool, so that would also be available for a ne station.
    3. Nuclear is clean.
Cons: 1. Nuclear is expensive to set up ,but cheap to run.
    2. We still have a hangover in NZ about the safety of nuclear.
    3. In relation to that, we don’t have earthquakes in NZ!!!???

    • Hi Andrew…we offered to stream the panel to all branch locations, but some chose not to participate. There was a question by an audience member along similar lines – the basis answer was that we simply don’t need it. The panel noted that nuclear is highly cost-prohibitive compared to other “resilience” options (eg, a coal stockpile), and that it doesn’t necessarily suit the transparent market structure in NZ, with de-commissioning costs at end of useful life usually requiring government intervention over decades.

Is there video recordings of the event please ?

    • Hi David, unfortunately the event was not able to be recorded, due to the requirements of the participants. We did offer to stream the vent to branch locations, which was taken up by some branches.
