James Miller
2025 Beacon Award
Legacy Award for Services to Governance – James Miller
James Miller has been a stalwart of New Zealand’s capital markets for some time, following an executive career in equities at Craigs Investment Partners and ABN Amro.
Notably, he was one of the inaugural directors of the Financial Markets Authority – together with NZSA’s inimitable Bruce Sheppard. The FMA had (and still has) a clear mandate to bring credibility and confidence to New Zealand’s capital market, through developing and enforcing investor protection provisions – a mission that has clearly resonated with James.
His prior directorships include Auckland Airport, Vector and ACC. James is a former Chair of NZX Limited, where his legacy remains in his championing of protections for retail shareholders and his commitment to world-class governance through the establishment of the Corporate Governance Institute.
These days, he retains a full dance card, with directorships of Vista Group, Channel Infrastructure (as Chair), Ryman Healthcare and as a long-serving (retiring) Director of Mercury Energy. An announcement late last year indicated that he would also be joining the board of Fletcher Building.
For most of those organisations, shareholders have benefitted from his considered approach to corporate transformation – shareholders of Ryman will be hoping that Miller’s approach will also be reflected in future value. It is a mark of Miller’s integrity that he will not start at Fletcher’s until his workload commitments are at a manageable level.
